990 not matched to the 204: wrong shipment ID in B1-02
You accepted the load, the 997 came back "accepted," and the broker still shows the tender as not responded, or as expired. Usually the 990 doesn't point at the tender it's answering.
What you see
The 997 for your 990 looks fine:
AK1*GF*512~ AK2*990*0001~ AK5*A~ AK9*A*1*1*1~
But the broker's portal or an email says something like "load tender response not matched," "shipment not found," or "tender expired." A 997 only checks syntax. It doesn't check whether your shipment ID matches a tender in their system.
What it means
The 204's B2-04 (element 145, Shipment Identification Number) is the partner's ID for the load. Your 990's B1-02 is the same element 145 and must echo it exactly, including any letters, leading zeros, and dashes. B1-01 is your SCAC (the SCAC that was tendered in the 204's B2-02), and B1-04 (element 558) is your answer: A = Reservation Accepted, D = Reservation Cancelled (declined).
Why it happens
- The map puts your own PRO or order number in B1-02 instead of the partner's shipment ID.
- Leading zeros or a prefix are stripped by the TMS (
005523901becomes5523901). - You answered the original tender after a change (
B2A*04) or cancellation (B2A*01) arrived. Answer the current version, as your partner's guide describes. - The SCAC in B1-01 isn't the one the tender went to (multi-SCAC carriers).
- The 990 was sent after the partner's response window closed. Their guide sets the deadline.
The exact fix
- Copy the 204's B2-04 into the 990's B1-02 character for character. Store it in your TMS exactly as received.
- Put the tendered SCAC from B2-02 in B1-01.
- Set B1-04 to
Ato accept orDto decline, and B1-03 to the date as CCYYMMDD. - If the partner requires more (for example an N9 reference or a decline reason), follow their 990 guide.
Before and after
The 204 you received:
ST*204*0001~
B2**XMPL**005523901**PP~
B2A*00~
...
ST*990*0001~
B1*XMPL*PRO88231*20261021*A~
SE*3*0001~ST*990*0001~
B1*XMPL*005523901*20261021*A~
SE*3*0001~B2A*00 = original tender. Your partner may require more segments in the 990; this shows only the required B1.
Not sure this is your error?
Paste your 997, TA1, rejected file, or the broker's error email into the free EDI Reject Checker. It decodes every AK3/AK4/AK5/AK9 and TA1 code and checks counts, control numbers, and dates in seconds. It runs in your browser, so nothing is uploaded.
Fix reports are paid up front; if we can't find the cause, the refund is automatic.
